Thank you all so much for your support during this Sheriff's race. It was an incredible opportunity to meet and talk with so many great people across Iowa County. I entered this race because I believed the office of Sheriff was too important to simply allow someone to take it in an uncontested race without any discussion of the problems or challenges our county is facing. Of all the positions in county government, the office of Sheriff has the potential to impact your life more than any other.
I am grateful I was able to provide so many of you across the county with a voice who otherwise may not have had one. I believe our campaign brought light to issues that otherwise would not have been addressed - even during the last six months, we managed to get real work done addressing a variety of those issues. The vote was close - very close, and it shows people across Iowa County in every community want to see positive change.
I wish Mike Peterson all the best as he takes command of the agency he will be responsible for leading. There are problems we discussed during this campaign that need to be addressed if we want to have effective and reliable public safety services in the future - and it will be no easy task. There are substantial challenges that lay ahead as we address crime coming into our county from outside our borders, particularly the trafficking of opiates. As County Board Supervisor for District 7, and member of the public safety committee, I will continue to work with everyone, including our Sheriff-elect to support initiatives that will help protect the people of Iowa County.
Please stay engaged as we move forward. Hold your elected officials to high standards. It is a critical time for public safety in our community and it is important that our leadership communicates clearly, operates transparently and pursues modern, evidence-based strategies in policing and corrections. We all have a role to play in keeping Iowa County safe for the future.
Thank you again - I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
